Course overview
Would you like more opportunities to speak English to develop greater fluency and confidence in conversation? We have designed the English Fluency Club for international students and University members whose first language is not English to provide a space to practice their speaking skills.
The course provides a lightly structured environment in which participants practise speaking with each other through a range of conversational activities and increasingly challenging tasks. Discussion will often begin more generally, but then move to specific topics, including opportunities to discuss division- and subject-specific academic work. The emphasis is on regular spoken interaction, allowing participants to develop their ability to express themselves more easily, spontaneously and effectively in English.
The course may be particularly useful for students who have relatively few opportunities to speak English in their everyday academic or social lives and who would benefit from additional regular speaking practice.
Students seeking a more structured and teacher-led approach to conversational vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation or specific academic speaking skills (e.g., giving presentations) should look to our suite of Academic Spoken Communication and Pronunciation classes.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will have had opportunities to:
- Develop greater fluency and confidence in spoken English
- Practise expressing ideas spontaneously in a range of conversational activities
- Develop the ability to communicate effectively in increasingly challenging speaking tasks
- Receive individual feedback on aspects of their spoken English
- Identify areas of their spoken English for further development
- Extend their vocabulary and receive guidance on pronunciation where needed
